The Radium Girls by Kate Moore

by

Having just finished this book tonight,  my heart goes out to the women in the story. The Radium Girls by Kate Moore is a non fiction book about young women who worked in factories painting glowing watch faces in the 1920's and 1930's.  After contracting radium poisoning the medical problems they experienced and the legal battles they fought with the companies they worked for are what this book is about.  These women were pioneers in the battle for safe working conditions.  This is a book to read for anyone that ever wondered why we have OSHA and all the laws and rules we have in order to protect workers.  The book covers two areas of the country.  One of the groups of women were in New Jersey and the other group in Illinois.  To view some of the newspaper clippings about the Illinois group click HERE.   I really liked this book.  I was able to read it fairly quickly as it held my interest and I did not want to put it down.  It will definitely make  my top ten list this year.  Please click on the book title and authors name above to follow the links to more information.  And enjoy the video that follows.
