Mother's Day Dinner and A Movie Double Feature Matinee

After crab quesadillas  Nicole and I watched two movies this afternoon.  For the first one (Pay It Forward)  I needed the kleenex box and for the second one (Fast Food Nation) I was left a little disturbed as it has a lot more to say about our immigration issue than it did about our fast food industry.   I had wanted to watch both movies for quite some time and am glad to have seen them.   I recommend either of them for when you are in a thoughtful mood.   I also recommend you order  your steaks medium well rather than medium rare.

  1. I saw PIF when it first came out .. have since forgotten what it was about. Don't think I saw the other one.

    My mother taught me many years ago to be the type of food shopper who watches the papers for the sales and then jump on them while the opportunity is there. I mostly follow her advice with re to the grocery store. When I can get boneless skinless chicken breasts for less than a buck a pound, I'll pick up 4 or 5 lbs. The next week when the chicken has gone back up maybe the pork loin is down or the beef, I will snatch that up. Once I get home, the meat comes out of the supermarket container and I put a meal's worth into individual zip lock sandwich bags, and then those bags in a gallon sized zip lock bag and label the bag with contents and date.
    When it gets to the point where the freezer is nearly full, it's Bar-be-cue time in River City. Yesterday and today I grilled about two weeks worth of meals. I cook the beef to the point where it is crisp on the outside but still raw in the middle. It comes off the grill and when it it cool it goes into new sandwich bags and new quart bags and gets relabeled. The chicken and pork cook a little longer, but still not at the "ready to eat" stage. They are cooled, bagged and tagged.
    Serves twp purposes, #1. Takes up less space in the freezer making room for more bargains, #2. Saves me from having to cook for a couple weeks. Pop a bag out of the freezer and into the broiler oven long enough for it to finish cooking, pop a bag of frozen veggies in the microwave and viola, all the flavor of barbecue without the hassle for just one meal and in about 1/4th the time.
    Could do the whole meal in the micro but I don't like the way meat tastes when it comes out of there.

    Go that eye surgery thing tomorrow, and not knowing when I can get my vision back, I'm trying to do a weeks worth of work and get it all into the office before I go in to the hospital. Work a few, rest a few, sleep a couple, work some more .... strange cycle, but it works for me.

  2. Fast Food Nation is about the fast food industry and the industries that surround it. The book is a non fiction work and I expected to be watching a documentary when I rented the movie. But instead it is a fiction movie that is based on three groups of people and raises non fiction issues about each group as they relate to the fast food industry. One of the main characters is a middle management person in a fast food chain - corporate type. One is a counter girl in a fast food joint. And the rest are non documented workers in a meat packing/slaughterhouse plant. Although the last group brings forth lots of questions for me that are not related to the fast food business the movie is not really about the grocery store. The movie that is about the grocery store food items I would like to see sometime I called "Food Inc". But I will wait a bit to do that. I am going to have a real problem with beef for awhile after watching "Fast Food Nation".
